How to install watchOS 8 beta on your compatible Apple Watch

The Apple Watch is a great device for fitness and other non-health-related features. It’s a (literal) lifesaver that makes our day-to-day tasks easier — through various handy tools and integrations with other Apple devices. What a lot of people don’t know, though, is that the company has a beta program for watchOS. By joining it, you get to try out the latest additions before Apple makes them available for the public. We must warn you, though, that once you update to a beta build of watchOS, you can’t roll back to a stable build without visiting an Apple Store or authorized repair center. Beta versions can be buggy and break features, so proceed only if you’re willing to take the risk.

How to install watchOS 8 beta

First, ensure that your Apple Watch is paired to an iPhone running the latest iOS beta in order to install watchOS beta. If you were planning on taking more risks with your Apple Watch but not your iPhone, you can’t do it.

Using the instructions to install iOS beta, install it on the iPhone that’s paired with the Apple Watch you’re about to upgrade.

  • Go to Apple Developer > Develop > Downloads, and click the ‘Install Profile’ button next to watchOS beta. It’s always easier to download it directly to your iPhone, but as was the case with iOS beta, you can also do it from a PC and email it to yourself. If you’re not willing to pay for Apple’s Developer program, you can join the public beta program instead.

  • Install the profile. The process is mostly the same as when you did it for the iOS beta, except this is going to happen through the Watch app instead of Settings.

  • Once it’s installed, reboot your Apple Watch as prompted.

  • In the Watch app, go to General > Software Update. There you can download the latest beta build available for your watch.
